Cool One UPF Bucket Hat

360-degree UV protection, extreme breathability and a cooling sweatband. We used the same ultra-breathable body fabric as the Cool One UPF Pullover to make this premium bucket hat, which is protective, breezy, and has enough brim structure to avoid the bacon-like waves that plague many bucket hats.

★★★★★

“Outstanding performance. I’ve utilized this hat during the course of spring training baseball down here in Tampa. It has done exactly what it was supposed to do and has kept my head very cool the days where the sun is incredibly strong. Much like the pullover and the baseball hat that I have your gear works to the maximum capacity in which it is meant. Thank you very much and I am looking forward to seeing more products coming out.”

The Material Story

The bucket hat, taken seriously.

The Cool One Bucket Hat shares its name with the Cool One Pullover for one reason. They're built from the same Toray DotAir fabric, the ultra-breathable knit used in elite performance apparel, with UPF 50+ sun protection across the full crown and 360-degree brim. The structure holds its shape so it looks like a hat you chose, not one you grabbed at a gas station.

The sweatband is a dedicated cooling fabric, so the part that touches your head stays comfortable in the heat. A cinch cord dials in the fit. The team colors are exact and the logo is officially licensed. It's the bucket hat we'd want on the boat, on the course, or in the bleachers, and it just happens to come in your team's colors.

The Backstory

The pursuit of a magical bucket hat

Of the original six products in the BCKR line, the Cool One Bucket Hat took us the longest to dial in. There’s a lot of nuance in making a good bucket hat. The brim needs to be wide enough to offer real sun protection, for one, and a lot of fashion-y buckets conveniently bypass this crucial utility.

If the brim doesn’t have enough structure, it looks sloppy. If it has too much structure, you look slightly Quaker. If the shape is even a little wrong, you may look like you’re either going to a gathering of witches or heading to Coachella. Or both?

COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you buy.

Why a bucket hat instead of another ballcap?

Coverage. A ballcap protects your face. A bucket hat protects your face, your neck, and your ears, with a 360-degree brim that blocks the sun from every angle. That matters when you’re on the boat, on the golf course, or in the bleachers for an early-season game with the sun overhead and nowhere to hide. We also know bucket hats have a reputation, which is why we built the most technical team bucket hat ever made. It holds its shape, sits like a hat you chose, and looks like real outdoor gear.

How does the Cool One Bucket Hat actually keep you cool?

Two ways. The body of the hat is built from Toray DotAir, the same ultra-breathable fabric used in the Cool One Pullover, so air moves through it constantly. The sweatband is a dedicated cooling fabric that lowers the surface temperature where it touches your skin. So the part that holds the heat in on most hats, the band that sits against your forehead, is the part doing the active cooling work here.

What’s the UPF rating?

UPF 50+, the highest sun protection rating available in apparel. The full crown and the 360-degree brim are all rated, so wherever the hat covers, you’re protected. That’s roughly the equivalent of SPF 50 sunscreen for your scalp, ears, and the back of your neck, without having to reapply every two hours.

Is BCKR officially licensed by the University of Oregon?

Yes. Every Oregon Ducks product is officially licensed through the University of Oregon. The logos, colors, and trademarks are all authorized. We use exact Pantone color matching, not approximations, for every piece. We also donate 10% of Oregon product sales to the UO Foundation. Our founder Corey grew up in Eugene and is an Oregon alum. This isn’t a brand that licensed some logos. It’s a brand built by Ducks.

Does the Cool One bucket hat cost more than other team hats?

The price difference is small. The functionality difference is huge. The Cool One Bucket Hat has UPF 50+ sun protection, a cooling sweatband, and the same Toray DotAir fabric used in premium performance apparel. It’s the difference between a souvenir and a piece of gear you’ll actually use on hot days.

Will it fit my head?

We have two sizes available. S/M fits 54-58cm head circumference (hat size 6 3/4 to 7 1/4) and L/XL fits 58-62cm (hat size 7 1/4 to 7 3/4). A cinch cord inside lets you fine-tune the fit within your size, so you can dial it tighter on a windy day or loosen it up when you want airflow.

Is the Cool One Bucket Hat just for gamedays?

Heck no. The Cool One Bucket Hat is the hat we’d want on the boat, on the golf course, on the trail, and in the garden. The color is Oregon green. The construction is premium outdoor. We built this so your team hat could also be the best sun hat you own, not something that lives at the bottom of your closet between Saturdays.

How does the Cool One Bucket Hat fit with the rest of the BCKR system?

BCKR builds gear as a system, designed to work together head-to-toe. The Cool One Bucket Hat pairs with the Cool One Pullover for full sun and heat coverage, same Toray DotAir fabric in both. The Dry One Cap is the rain counterpart, built from the waterproof membrane used in the Dry One Jacket. The Warm One Cap handles cold weather with a sherpa fleece liner. Pick the hat that matches the day, or own all three and be ready for anything Oregon throws at you.

Why does BCKR use the UO logo instead of the O?

First off, we love the interlocking UO. That was the mark on the side of the helmet for Terry Obie’s end around, Musgrave to Ferry, and Kenny Wheaton’s world rocker, our Duck founder’s childhood memories. But the reason we don’t use the O, which we also love, is because we can’t. There’s a company up in Beaverton who has exclusive rights to use that logo on apparel and footwear.
